THE STORY OF CARNAVAL DE PARIS
Following the global success in 1997 of Sunchyme, Dario G searched for a follow up idea. Desperate to create something equally original but not a clone of the first mega-hit, the eyes were cast forward in the calendar to the next summer of 1998. With the concept of creating an Unofficial global World Cup anthem the experimentation began. The idea to create a track using musical elements from across the globe was ambitious to say the least, with the budget for recording set to be a polar contrast of the £40 spent recording Sunchyme.
Multiple musicians playing, hitting, scraping, blowing and toying with various traditional and very non traditional instruments saw the London studio bursting at the seams. The coffee was flowing and a month spent vibing, recording, stressing, re-recording, testing, experimenting, tidying and mixing resulted in the head scratching genius that is "Carnaval de Paris". The initial response from Dario G’s native UK was positively lukewarm, but Carnaval de Paris found immediate support from Germany and many other countries around the World. Once the World Cup tournament was underway in France, even the UK joined the Carnaval procession. Only one artist has ever achieved a top 5 European hit with a bagpipe solo at its heart - Dario G!
Fast forward 20 years and the Carnaval de Paris is still in full swing. It’s not just football that the track has found its appreciation tied to. Multiple sports have adopted it, while films and adverts have adorned its soundtrack for many years. In the USA, the unlikely usage in Ballroom dancing was instrumental in its continued use over successive series on “Dancing With the Stars”.
Here’s to the next 20 years of Dario G - Carnaval de Paris!
